“Sometimes, being a bitch is all a women has to hang on to ”

ree

My fellow book lovers...it has been a hot minute since my last review I am so sorry for the delay so much has happened. I need to write a review on my move here soon so you can all get up to speed on what I have been up to. As far as reading, I have been reading, A LOT I just haven't sat down and typed out my thoughts. So here it is! Let's get started.

This book was 372 pages, it was written in first person solely based on only the character Dolores Claiborne's perspective. This is the first time I have read a book of Stephen King's like this and it was completely unique, I absolutely enjoyed every page. I would rate this book a 4/5, not my top ten but definitely up in my top 20. King always writes women's perspectives well and I love that he gives his characters life. Dolores had a deep southern accent and you can read that throughout the book; I thoroughly enjoyed this because it really helped you understand her more and what life was like living on Little Tall Island.

As a side note this book is aligned with Gerald's Game based on where the Eclipse hit two towns at the same time that night so that is next on my TBR list. This little girl girl and Dolores both align while the eclipse is happening and I have to learn about her story as well. That will be next and I can't wait to tell y'all about it!

Let's dive in...SPOILERS ahead

This was one of the many times I have read King's books and thought, oh I've got this one figured out; nope the ending definitely through me for a loop. The whole time Dolores is explaining her story to a police officer because she is trying to explain how she was not guilty for killing Vera Donovan. As the book continues we learn about how awful Dolores's husband is towards her and her children and how she been fighting with him for years and finally stands up to him. Dolores works for Vera as her house keeper and explains how Vera has always been a bitch to work for but they tolerated each other throughout the years and grew to be friends who truly cared for one another.

Dolores has a mental breakdown in Vera's room one day when she's cleaning and Vera hints at her that some husbands just have accidents and pass away. Dolores can't believe what she's hearing but Vera explains that sometimes being a bitch is all a women has to hang onto. Dolores hears Vera out and is seriously thinking of how to get rid of her own husband. At a turn of incredibly horrible events Dolores finds out that her husband has sexually abused their own daughter in every way except having sex with her in the past few months and this is what truly throws Dolores over the edge.

As the whole town plans for the Eclipse including Vera, Dolores is planning her husband's death and how she will successfully get away with. As the night of the Eclipse comes upon them all Dolores leaves work early to go buy Joe (her Husband) a bottle of scotch for the evening. Her plan is to get him wasted and have him fall down the well in their backyard. They end up fighting and he does end up falling down the well but the initial fall doesn't kill him. Dolores ends up having to beat him over the head with a rock because he is trying to climb out of the well to kill her. Noone in the town ever suspected her and she had planned for this for many months; but she is now coming clean so that the police force will know that she didn't kill Vera. What happened to Vera was truly an accident and Dolores had wished the women no ill will.

The real shocker. Vera wanted Dolores to end her life she had suffered long enough. As Vera was lying on the stairs halfway down from her fall Dolores held her hand and promised she would give the woman some mercy. When Dolores went to the kitchen to grab a weapon and come back Vera had already passed away. Dolores took the death hard surprisingly because no matter what she said about Vera throughout the book they truly had cared for each other. Vera was a millionaire and had left her estate to Dolores which had come to her as a shock because Vera had kids...or so she thought. When Vera was talking about her husband's death earlier in the book it turns out she killed her entire family to be away from their burdens and to live her life happily by herself. The ironic part of this was that as Vera got older she truly believed her kids were still alive and were going to come visit her, she completely forgot they had died in a horrible car accident. Dolores had inherited 30 million dollars which she donated to an orphanage because she wanted nothing to do with the money.

As the book came to an end the reporter that was with the cop wrote a paper on Dolores and it said that Dolores's kids finally came to visit her. King never says the reason as to why they finally went to Little Tall to visit her but I think that she was finally going to come clean to them about what had happened to their father. Her daughter had suspected it for years but Dolores could never truly tell her until now.

Personally I think this was another well written novel by king, no surprise there. If you get the chance to read this definitely do it was a very unique writing style for King and I truly enjoyed every page of this novel it was different and kept me on my toes.

I would Love to hear your thoughts on this book if you have read ir, seen the movie, or adding it to your TBR. Let's start a convo!
