I CANNOT RAVE ABOUT THIS BOOK ENOUGH. This will be a longer review since I will be reviewing not only the book, but the movie as well. Might I just say this was one of the very few movies that matched a Stephen King novel perfectly. This book was 432 pages and I loved every minute of it. I actually saw the movie before I read this book and I am glad I did because the characters matched the images from the movie as I read the book. Honest rating 5/5 another one of my top 10 Stephen King Novels (don't worry ill do a blog list of my top 10 King soon). Movie Review also a 5/5 I think they really did an amazing job with following the book I was very, very impressed.
Warning spoilers ahead
Lets get the main characters out of the way and then we'll move onto the review itself.
Paul Edgecombe - Main Character he is in charge of E Block at Cold Mountain.
Eduard Delacroix- French inmate on the Green Mile, he gives Steamboat Willy the name Mr. Jingles.
Brutus Howell "Brutal"- Large but friendly guard at E Block.
John Coffey- Giant prisoner on the Green Mile, has the magic healing power.
Mr. Jingles/Steamboat Willy- The mouse that is frequently mentioned throughout the story and is Del's pet.

Percy Wetmore- The most hated guard on the Mile, has many connections in politics and is protected from being fired.
William Wharton "Wild Bill"- Crazy, young inmate in the Mile, that causes many problems.
Let's get to the review
This book was incredible from beginning to end King really pulled you in you go through every emotion possible; anger, frustration, sadness, relief, love, excitement, and happiness. This story was Beautifully sad, of course it never fails there are some tormenting evil characters in this novel who are Percy, Wild bill, and Brad Dolan (caretaker that terrorizes Paul at the nursing home). The story begins with Paul at a nursing home as an older man who writes the story of his life on "The Green Mile;" which is what they called it since the floors were green, it was the penitentiary for death row. As he begins to tell the story at the time on the mile they only have two inmates; Delacroix and Arlen Bitterbuck. Arlen was the first to walk the green mile, Paul went in depth with what they do on the mile such as; getting their last meal, a last call or visit from family, one last prayer and how the execution itself plays out. Death on the mile is by electric chair, they make sure to shave a spot on all the inmates heads so they can place a wet sponge on top as to not burn them during their execution just straight electric shock (remember this for later).
They end up getting two more inmates as the time goes on one is John Coffey who is a giant and can barely fit in his cell. John is brought in for the murder and rape of two twin girls. They of course are weary of him not only because of his size, but because of his charges. As time goes on they all realize that he is a gentle giant. Even Paul's first encounter with John was interesting, John had asked if the lights stayed on at night because he was afraid of the dark. He also said he couldn't fix what he had done; but he had tried to so of course Paul had thought he was confessing to what he had done; later we find out the truth of what had actually happened that day. The other is Wild Bill who is 19 years old, in the movie they definitely made him seem older. He knows how to outsmart the guards but he is not very intelligent at all. When they went to go pick up Wild Bill he pretended like he was on a bunch of drugs drooling and not blinking, well they were all in for a rude awakening when he arrived at the Mile. Wild Bill didn't earn that nickname for nothing he would trick people into giving him food so he could spit it back at the guards, he earned himself many stays in the padded room in a straight jacket, he was sprayed with the water hose, and he constantly tortured Percy who than in turn took it out on Delacroix.
Delacroix I felt had one of the saddest story of them all. Yes, his crimes were awful he raped and murdered a young girl and then started a fire that killed more people; but he was tortured the most by Percy and his death was absolutely terrifying. Percy called him a "faggot", broke his fingers, killed his pet mouse (John brought back to life), and was able to execute him in the worse possible way. During the execution of Delacroix, Percy did not wet the sponge for his head. Not doing this caused Delacroix to burn to death and the quick execution took way longer just because they were basically frying him to death. Percy went to look away and Paul forced him to watch since this torturous sight was his fault. During the entire execution John felt all of Delacroix's pain because of his gift. Not only during the execution did Percy make Delacroix suffer he also told him that the mouse town Paul said they were sending Mr. Jingles to was made up. Percy wanted to make sure he suffered in every possible way.
Paul continues to tell his story and as hes telling it he explains the healing powers John has and how he couldn't believe it even when it had happened to him. John had used his healing powers to take Paul's UTI, bring Mr. Jingles back to life after Percy stepped on him, heal Hal's wife Melinda of her brain cancer, and later gives Paul a piece of himself to show him the truth of what had happened to those twin girls. He also gives Wild Bill and Percy the karma they both desperately need (my favorite part of the book) When John comes back from healing Melinda he holds onto the bad (normally he coughs it out and it looks like ash/flies in the air that disappear) he saves it for Percy. When Brutal and Paul let Percy out from the padded room John grabs him and blows the bad into his mouth. Percy then goes over to Wild Bill and shoots him multiple times killing him and becoming comatose. Percy is admitted to the psych ward and Wild Bill died the death he was long deserving of. John's death was the saddest of all and was the last execution Paul ever did because he felt wrong for letting such an angel die. John explains to him that hes tired of hearing and feeling everyone's pain and he just wants to rest, "hes tired boss dog tired." The twins parents are there in the crowd and are telling John they hope he feels all of it and that he rots in hell. If only they knew he wasn't the actual monster who raped and murdered their baby girls.
All in all I absolutely loved this story it brought me to tears as well as gave me a sort of happy ending since that normally doesn't happen in King stories...well the best kind of happy ending you can get. If you get the chance to read this one definitely do it; if not watch the movie because they are spot on with each other. AMAZING is all I can say.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the book or the movie whichever one you have read or seen. Add it to your TBR or TBW. Let's start a conversation!
