First of all let me say it has been wayyyyy too long since my last blog post and I am sincerely sorry for this. I have continued to read, but stopped blogging due to not having enough time and I am so glad to be back. I definitely missed it and am making a valiant effort to blog even if I feel I don't have time because I enjoy it and its something I am, very passionate about. Okay onto the blog!
I definitely wouldn't put this in my top 10 Stephen King novels, but it was still a good read that kept me on my toes. King always surprises us with his endings to some of his stories and I have to say this wasn't one of my favorite endings. This was more of an open minded ending, like you can let your mind wander into what could've happened. PEOPLE!! I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE. I NEED CLOSURE. You all may like endings like that and if so than definitely give this book a read. I rated this one actually a 3.5/5 it was very descriptive, I loved the whole idea of it; but I personally needed closure, he left me wanting more.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Lets dive in shall we... the book begins with a family that is living in a small town with a home right off the lake; there is a bad storm and the husband (David), the wife (Stephanie) and their son 7 year old son(Billy) are bunkering down since the winds are so treacherous by the water. They end up heading to the basement for the night and fall asleep (as usual Stephen King always includes someone with some kind of Shine I believe) the shine came to David in his dream. He has a dream that God takes a giant step and claps his hands there is a bright purple light and a fog goes over the lake. As they wake up they asses the damage from the storm; of course there are fallen trees everywhere, their front window has a tree through it, the electricity lines are on the ground, and their boathouse was completely smashed with a tree. David begins his cleanup outside by trimming down the trees in their driveway with a chainsaw, Billy goes to play, and Stephanie is cleaning up the mess in the house. Billy is so excited about seeing the wreckage from the storm he wants to show his parents the boathouse, they all walk around back and notice that the whole right side of the lake is covered in a thick white fog that can't even be seen through.
The first thing that comes to David's mind is his dream form last night and how strange that the fog is a complete solid line down the middle of the lake. Stephanie is very bothered by the fog; but keeps busy inside the house, David goes back to chopping down the trees so he can go to the store and grab them some more food supplies. As David was chopping up the trees in his driveway he heard his neighbor struggling with his chainsaw, which amused him since they had some bad history from a legal battle over land. Brent Norton (the neighbor) ends up coming over and asking David for some help and they decide to go to the store together since Norton's car was destroyed by a fallen tree. David had asked his wife if she wanted to tag along, but she didn't like the way Norton was looking at her (in the book Norton is a man in his 50's or 60's) so she decided to stay back and that was the last time he saw his wife. (When I first read this I assumed she had died, the book never really tells us, but I am still under the conclusion that she did die).
Once Billy, David, and Norton get to the store David has an uneasy feeling about his wife. They couldn't get any stations on the radio and he decides to let Norton and Billy go inside so he can call his wife from the landline. He calls but she doesn't pick up so he figures she is still working in the vegetable garden. Everyone in town is at the grocery store due to the storm David figures they will probably be here for a while; as they're waiting to checkout David is becoming more uneasy about his wife. Someone from outside says everyone should really come check out the fog it's fascinating so multiple people go outside, when suddenly people start screaming and disappearing into the mist. Once the people in the store figure out something bad is out there they start banding together to keep the doors closed and keep people in and the things out. Of course there are your typical groups the crazy cult people, the thinkers, the doers and the ones that want to just leave and face it. Norton was one of the few that left and David asked someone in the group to hold onto a clothes line and see how far they get if they make it he will tie it off to something. As they head out everyone in the store starts to hear screaming, the clothes line starting flying back and forth rapidly and then drops. David begins to bring the clothes line back and everyone sees red and a frayed end.
I don't want to give too much away but they have a run in with a few prehistoric creatures in the story and end up getting in David's 4WD car and getting away only 4 of them but they make it. As they are driving away the Mist doesn't end and David figured out that the creatures can smell them that's how they are able to find them so as long as they stay in the car with the windows rolled up and find places to stay they will make it. Basically he is writing an entry in a journal as they are stopped and is talking about how they will need to get gas soon but that means being outside of the car.
In conclusion this was a very well written read and I did enjoy the monsters in the story I think that a parallel universe came into play somehow and now there are prehistoric monsters that are roaming the earth. I do wish the ending would have been different but that is just me.
I would Love to hear your thoughts on this book if you have read it, seen the movie, seen the TV show or are adding it to your TBR. Lets start a convo!
Thank you so much for reading my blog review and I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday!! Until next week, stay reading.
